It's a salt derived from benzoic acid and is used as a preservative in foods and cosmetics. Sodium benzoate and water produce benzoic acid, which is the active form of the preservative. Sodium benzoate has been used in a wide variety of products because of its antimicrobial and flavor characteristics.

Preservative l   Sodium Benzoate is bacteriostatic and fungistatic under acidic conditions. It is most widely used in acidic foods, also used as a preservative in medicines and cosmetics.
 
Fuel
l   used in fireworks as a fuel in whistle mix, a powder that emits a whistling noise when compressed into a tube and ignited;
l   The fuel is also one of the fastest burning rocket fuels and provides a lot of thrust and smoke.
Corrosion inhibitor l   Used to keep many different types of metals from rusting.
l   Used as a corrosion inhibitor in engine coolant systems.
